The United States Naval Academy was founded in 1845 by Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft. Annapolis was chosen as the location because it was considered "a healthy, secluded spot to rescue Midshipmen from the temptations and distractions associated with the big cities" . . . . Freshmen are called Plebes . . . . The first Wednesday of each month is Corndog Day in the Academy cafeteria.
