Life In These East Tennessee Hills

In Monday's Knoxville News-Sentinel, the lead story told of the bust of what is believed to be the "biggest and oldest cockfighting pit in the country... " located in the Cocke County town of Del Rio.

During the raid, the Humane Society euthanized as many as 300 of the aggressive chickens, leading to an outcry from chicken owners and spectators. Let's return to the story where it gets very interesting:

David Webb, a gamecock owner from Rhea County who said he lost more than 20 chickens valued at $150 each during the raid, was furious that officials from the Humane Society and U.S. Dept. of Agriculture killed the birds. . .

"They killed my chickens," he said. "I've been around this stuff all my life. Everything I've ever known is a chicken fight."
